In general, research trainees have the following rights:
To receive from the organisations, centres or institutions to which they belong the collaboration and support necessary for the normal progress of their studies and research programmes.
To be integrated into the departments, institutions and public or private organisations in which they conduct their research.
To participate, in the manner stipulated in the University’s statutes, in its governance and representative bodies.
To participate in applications for additional grants to attend scientific meetings or training and specialisation placements in centres other than the main research centre.
To exercise the intellectual property rights resulting from their own creative research work, in accordance with their contribution and current legislation.
To enjoy all the other rights recognised in the respective calls.
To have their rights upheld by means of the procedures established for this purpose by the internal regulations of the University, including actions by the Ombudsman.
Research trainees at the Doctorate School of the UIC also have the following specific rights:
To have the adequate facilities to enable them to carry out their studies normally.
To participate in the training activities organised within the doctoral programme which are necessary for their research training.
To be assigned a thesis tutor at the time of admission to the doctoral programme.
To have a thesis supervisor assigned within six months of the research trainee being admitted to the doctoral programme and within the same academic year as their admission.
To request a second thesis supervisor, subject to submission of a justified explanation.
To request a change in the thesis supervisor, subject to submission of a justified explanation.
To apply to complete the doctoral thesis on a part-time basis, providing justified reasons for this request.
To apply for an extension to the date of submission of the doctoral thesis, providing justified reasons for this in accordance with the established deadlines.
To apply for temporary leave of absence from the doctoral programme, providing justified reasons for this in accordance with the established deadlines.
All the rights conferred by the Students’ Statute and other regulations in force.
Research trainees with a contract have the right to the corresponding remuneration according to the established terms and conditions for each call, and to be registered with the General Social Security system according to the established terms.
Responsibilities of Trainee Researchers
In general, research trainees have the following responsibilities:
To carry out the activities stipulated in their training and research specialisation programmes.
To fulfil the objectives of the training and specialisation programmes successfully.
To abide by the internal regulations and procedures of the organisation or institution at which they work, especially with respect to working conditions and the prevention of occupational risks.
To assume the obligations incumbent upon them as a result of their registration with the General Social Security system and, in the case of trainee research personnel with a contract, the obligations associated with that employment contract.
To care for and make appropriate use of the items, equipment, facilities, etc. belonging to both the University and any collaborating entities.
Trainee researchers at the Doctorate School of the UIC Barcelona have the following specific responsibilities:
To enrol in the programme each academic year by the deadlines given in the doctoral studies management calendar. Failure to enrol will be understood as relinquishment of the place.
To follow and participate in the training activities on the doctoral programme.
To record the activities undertaken in the doctoral candidate’s Record of Activities document.
To carry out the research and study tasks inherent to their position as a research trainee with due dedication and taking full advantage of them.
To act ethically when disclosing the results obtained in writing up the doctoral thesis, avoiding plagiarism and abiding by the principles of intellectual property law.
To take part every year in the established procedure for monitoring doctoral theses.
If they decide to relinquish their place on the doctoral programme, to notify the Doctorate School of the reasons that have led to this decision.
Any other responsibilities conferred by the Students’ Statute and other regulations in force.
Responsibilities of doctoral students
To sign the commitment document outlining the responsibilities and supervisory duties of the tutor and supervisor in the form established by the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya.
To comply with the training activities and research seminars planned in the doctoral study course and other activities agreed with the supervisor, and record them in the Record of Activities of the doctoral candidate.
To send the supervisor the work in the agreed format and frequency and to submit the thesis manuscript to the supervisor sufficiently far in advance of the agreed date for submission for his/her final review.
To comply with the health and safety requirements involved in the work or any other specific requirements that apply to the workplace where the research is being conducted.
To comply with the ethical standards established by the University.
