The 21st edition of the Barcelona Ceramics Chair awards the most innovative projects in architectural ceramics

The jury was made up of Max Arrocet, director of the architecture firm AL_A and expert in the architectural avant-garde; Hernán Cortés, architect of the Ricardo Bofill Architecture Workshop; and Eva Pedrajas, director of communication and promotion of the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER).

The UIC Barcelona School of Architecture students who have taken the monographic course on ceramics, sponsored by the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER), presented their work to the jury. The course was taught by Professor Vicente Sarrablo and lecturers and architects Jordi Roviras and Cristina García Castelao, on the 20th anniversary of the Chair.

Winning projects

The three winning students of this edition were Blanca Baranera, Mireia Abadías and Daniela Bueno.

Mireia Abadías presented her project Balteia, a design that “is born from the need to transform traditional retaining walls into elements that provide aesthetics and utility to public space”. The Abadías project stands out for its inclusive character, highlighting, in addition, the possibilities of ceramic materials in terms of hygiene and health in public spaces.

On the other hand, the Hidrobrick project, by student Blanca Baranera, presents a self-supporting cooling ceramic piece that takes advantage of solar radiation to turn it into a cooling element by integrating special gels inside.

With her project Umbral, student Daniela Bueno proposes a transition system between two spaces that represent protection and openness. Her project offers great compositional possibilities with a piece that stands out for its precision and elegance.

The Barcelona Ceramics Chair, which has been running for 21 consecutive years thanks to the sponsorship of the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER), aims to foster links between architecture students and industry. In this way, future architects can focus their proposals on the use of ceramics, innovating in new formats or developing applications and features in existing formats.
