Introduction

Television Production and Direction aims to initiate the student to the fundamental knowledge and skills of television entertainment: how a television program is created, produced and performed. To do this, an analysis of the current television genres will be made and the process of creation, production and programming of the television programs will be shown. In addition, you will experience what it means to work as a team and launch a format as a professional production.

Objectives

  • Provide students with the basic knowledge of the television world to develop a professional broadcast product
  • Implementation of all phases and stages of the production process of a television format
  • Providing the appropiate skills to carry out the professional function in entertainment content on a broadcast media

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students:

• will know the different television genres and their peculiarities
• will identify the broadcasting framework of the audiovisual platforms
• will know and put into practice the process of television creativity
• will know the key aspects of audiometry and the needs of the industry
• will identify current television trends, the most successful and failed formats and the difference between their programming in public and private channels
• will orally defend individually an idea of a format that should be consistent with the proposed placement
• acquire basic and very clear skills of the work of step outline and script for entertainment shows
• implement the basic principles of teamwork of a television entertainment production
• will follow the process of developing a television format from the genesis of the idea to pre-production, production, post-production until the final viewing

Item 1. Genres and formats

1.1. Introduction to television genres and formats. Macro genres, genres and formats. Practical examples.
1.2. How to formalize a format: preparation of a television format file

Item 2. General analysis of television formats

2.1. Approach to television trends
2.2. Successful formats and failed formats
2.3. Public TV formats and private TV formats  

Item 3. Television entertainment production and production

3.1. Introduction to the production and realization of entertainment
3.2. Television performance according to the genre and the type of broadcast  

Item 4. Preproduction.

4.1. Conceive and design a TV show.
4.2. Synopsis, runway and script. Development of the content of a format.
4.4. TV team and functions.

Item 5. Script

5.1. Entertainment script Needs and peculiarities.
5.2. Conditioners of the script. Rules of the game before writing.
5.3. The role of the screenwriter in the great genres. Analysis of the script of contests, realities, magazines and special shows.

Item 6. Step Outline

6.1. The importance of step outline as a fundamental tool of television production. Examples of runways of different programs (Buenafuente, El Intermedio, Polònia, Operación Triunfo).
6.2. The communication within the production teams.
6.3. Script content units Analysis of the basic units of content from which you work in the television industry.

Item 7. From the runway to the script

7.1. The script writing cycle: think, write, rewrite, discard and rewrite.
7.2. Common elements of entertainment scripts and their peculiarities.
7.3. The opening of a show. Analysis of concrete examples how a show starts: approach to gender, tone, rhythm, immediacy.
7.4. The end of the shows




Practice 1.

Format and oral defense sheet of the idea and its location proposal. Each student must defend the idea on a pitching (synopsis and technical file) of a newly created television format. The group will choose the format presented to carry it out in the week of the workshop.    



Practice2.

Scripted and script workshop Preparation of short story and script of the selected formats to carry out the workshop. Reading and group analysis of the different versions of the script aof the format that will take place.    



Multi-camera format recording

Recording and editing of the format designed and developed during the course of the subject. The course ends with an implementation of the knowledge acquired in the subject. Students must record the format chosen and worked in class in a multi-camera format on the Faculty's set. The work group should work like a real television team, distributing the functions and ranking positions. They will have the support of the tutors and the technical staff of the faculty. Once the format has been recorded, they must present in class in a first joint viewing that will prepare the final viewing in which the latest version of the program will be delivered.

Coaching. Monitoring how students learn the content of the subject, either individually or in groups. In the coaching sessions, mistakes will be corrected, queries answered, and exercises and activities to achieve the established objectives will be suggested.

Meeting Point. Meetings will be organised with notable people from the professional and scientific fields or the international field, and students. These sessions will take the form of conferences, work sessions, discussions, or interviews, etc.

Workshop. Advanced and intensive workshops of a longer duration, led by lecturers and/or foreign professionals, in which the language used is English. These culminate in the creation of a professional or semi-professional product which is also produced in English.

Practical workshop. A highly practical working activity, where students can acquire skills that are practical or also theoretical (intellectual skills, logical skills, critical skills, intellectual learning skills, study skills, quoting skills, etc).

Lectures. In lectures, lecturers/professors not only transmit content or knowledge, but also, and above all else, attitudes, motivation, skills and values, etc. They also ensure that participants can express their opinions and arguments to the other students.

In order to pass the course in the 1st call, a project of a television format must be presented and put into practice in a group on the set of the Faculty. Once edited, the final viewing of the format will be presented together with the individual and group memory.
