Introduction

Television is a form of media of recent life, but they have an intense, prolific and influential career. They receive the constant attention of politicians and people in social action and they are an entertainment source for the evasion of millions of viewers worldwide. Later, the internet has revolutionized the rules of communication.

The subject aims to provide students with sufficient knowledge to enable them to understand the evolution of these media throughout history. The current situation of these two disciplines is the result of an evolution that has been marked by the introduction of new technologies and by the constant dialogue that we have as transmitters and receivers altogether.

Harnessing intellectual productions that are now being offered to the public increases if it takes place in one environment that allows exceeding the simple perception of the vision. This subject aims to provide students with the tools to achieve it by proposing an entry to the diachronic dimension of the media, its syntax and the society around them and connecting them with other realities and artistic media. All this takes place in an analytical context that goes beyond the mere memorisation of data.

Objectives

The subject aims to show students the ways that Television and internet have followed throughout their history in the international context. The explanation of the different models of both disciplines nowadays should allow  students to interpret how the evolution of these media has consolidated in them in the various manifestations of mass media today.

An additional goal is to assess the cultural heritage of the ancestors of the guild to facilitate the understanding of the evolutionary processes experienced by way of audiovisual representation; to facilitate the assimilation of a chronological and conceptual framework based on the evolution of big media and to enable students to meet the conditions of work performed and the critical treatment of information on various aspects of the subject.

The subject also aims to help students to learn the basic tools of historical audiovisual documentation, to work independently on learning this during and after the course and to consolidate their knowledge and to transmit them and use them in the communication field.

Finally, latent and present in all of the above, is the power of observation, comparison and analysis of the creations in relation to their age and contemporary features, before and after production.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Upon completion of the subject, students will have obtained a an outcome a general knowledge of the organic evolution and structural history of the media studied.

In addition, they will obtain the ability to contextualise any fact relevant today in terms of media temporal history of both disciplines in order to understand its meaning and its social outreach through analysis; the knowledge and understanding of the complex dynamics and relationships present in a globalised world. Also, they will achieve an economic and / or business vision of the professional field of their productions and projects.

Besides, the subjects induce to assess the role of vocational training in diachronic observation, creativity and relevant analysis; to manage chronological concepts as diachrony  and synchrony in a practical way; to express concepts that link history, art and audiovisuals and to be familiar with the examination of phenomena that seem universal but become individuals by culture.

3. Television in the United States.

4. Television in Spain and Catalonia.

5. Other television in the world.

 

B. History of (new) media

1. The evolution of the media in the Internet era. VOD platforms and the new audiovisual scenario. The case of Netflix.

2. New modes of consumption, new modes of creation.

Lectures. In lectures, lecturers/professors not only transmit content or knowledge, but also, and above all else, attitudes, motivation, skills and values, etc. They also ensure that participants can express their opinions and arguments to the other students.

Coaching. Monitoring how students learn the content of the subject, either individually or in groups. In the coaching sessions, mistakes will be corrected, queries answered, and exercises and activities to achieve the established objectives will be suggested.

Seminar. This activity will consist of taking an in-depth look at specific up-to-date topics in a monographic manner-in some cases these topics will have been debated socially-, via active work in small groups.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



First call (continuous assessment)

The percentages of the evaluation will be the following:

- 45% Exam

- 20% Individual video essay. 

- 15% Debate on a topic related to the contents of the course. The debate will be based on a reading or viewing. The debate schedule will be given at the beginning of the course. The depth and rigour of the information will be assessed, as well as the expressive capacity and the ability of each member to transmit the information.

- 15% Participation and attitude (active participation and critical contributions in the discussions).

 

Second sitting

If you fail the course in the first sitting, you must pass an exam on the contents of the course.

Other examinations

The subject will have to be repeated in the third and subsequent exams.


*The teacher reserves the right to suspend students if they do not comply with the minimum initiative and participation requirements during the process.
