Introduction

Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Pain Therapeutics was formerly defined as the medical science in charge of pain relief as well as the care of the surgical patient before, during and after a surgical intervention. To be precise, the anesthesiologist is the only specialist in charge of the medical management of the surgical patient throughout the entire process. However, over the past few years, this specialty has gained many other competitions within hospitals. In many hospital centers, anesthesiologists are in charge of the critically ill patient and of the management both intra-hospital and extra-hospital. This includes the polytraumatic patient, cardiac arrest or management of the semi-critical patient in Resuscitation. Likewise, knowledge in the treatment of pain through postoperative pain management makes the anesthesiologist responsible for both acute and chronic pain units of any etiology. Therefore, Anesthesiology has become one of the most transversal specialties of Medicine.

Pre-course requirements

• Have taken the subject of Semiology and physiopathogenesis.
• Have taken the subject of Surgical Pathophysiology.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Learning outcomes of the subject

• Recognize the main types of shock in a patient.
• Understand the main therapeutic management in the different types of shock.
• Understand and identify that you are an urgent patient.
• Learn which are the main characteristics of the polytraumatic patient.
• Know which specialties usually participate in the polytraumatic patient and what dynamics are established between them.
• Understand the scheme of action in the polytraumatic patient.
• Identify what is cardiac arrest.
• Assimilate how to act in cardiac arrest.
• Incorporate the action scheme in cardiac arrest.

Syllabus

Module 1: Introduction to Anesthesiology and general concepts.


The objectives consist in that the student acquires a general idea of what the specialty represents, what competencies, objectives and responsibilities it has and with which hospital areas it relates.
· Master class: Presentation of the subject. Explanation of the syllabus that will be dealt with throughout it as well as the distribution and structure of the different classes.
· Case method: The objective of this case method is to put the student in the context of common clinical situations in the daily practice of the anesthesiologist.

 

Module 2: Basic techniques and skills of the specialty.


· Skills laboratory: become familiar with techniques directly related to the specialty but that every general practitioner should know. Also, put it in the context of clinical situations and complications related to them.

 

Module 3: Acute and chronic pain.


The objectives are for the student to acquire theoretical knowledge and basic skills for the diagnosis and treatment of pain in multidisciplinary units of both acute and chronic pain.
- Master class: Definition of pain, concept and epidemiology (scope of the problem). Types of pain, their characteristics and examples. Explanation of what Pain Units are, how they are configured and what they do.
- Case method: Identify, assess and propose an acute pain prevention strategy in a surgical patient (depending on the type of surgery and the characteristics of the patient) and post-traumatic pain.
- Skills Laboratory: The objective of this laboratory is to identify the different types of chronic pain as well as the social, economic, psychological and physical repercussions it has on patients.

 

Module 4: Hemodynamics of the surgical patient.

The objectives of this module are for the student to have a basic notion of the peculiarities in the hemodynamic control of the surgical patient.
- Master class: basic in relation to the hemodynamics of the surgical patient.
- Case method: septic shock.
- Case method: hemorrhagic and cardiogenic shock.

 

Module 5: Urgent patient.


The objectives of this module are to get used to the urgent patient related to the specialty that consists of the polytraumatic patient and cardiac arrest.

- Master class: Definition of urgent patient and relationship with Anesthesiology. Definition of the polytraumatic patient and cardiac arrest.
- Skills laboratory: Polytraumatic patient.
- Skills laboratory: Patient with cardiac arrest.

Evaluation systems and criteria

The final grade for the course is broken down into four sections that are specified below:

  • 20% Participation and involvement throughout the course.
  • 30% Evaluation of the practical part in which the students will be involved during the case methods and skills labs.
  • 20% Multiple choice exams at the end of the classes taught.
  • 30% Final test.

To pass the course, a minimum grade of 5 must be obtained in all sections of the course. Likewise, in case of suspending the final test and attending the second call, the notes of the rest of the sections will be saved.
