Introduction
Many patients who come to the clinic for dental treatment are elderly, have systemic diseases that require an exact knowledge of these and their implications and interactions in the dental area, cardiovascular, immunological, endocrine, metabolic pathologies, etc. that must be known by the dentist in order to correctly perform the treatments, safely for both the patient and the dentist. Likewise, people with some type of disability present complex and difficult challenges for the profession. Added to this is the appearance of oral lesions secondary to taking certain medications, interactions between them or oral manifestations of underlying systemic diseases. We consider all of them special patients.
Currently, academic training in the degree is limited to purely theoretical concepts and a reduced clinical practice in elderly people with little risk. Patients with significant medical involvement, with mental disabilities and who are uncooperative generate a pathology that the degree student, given their inexperience, is not able to handle with ease. The techniques, materials and procedures used in these patients are substantially different and generate opportunities to promote research. Finally, the shortage of professionals trained in this area and the demand from specialized centers and hospitals can only be met from the perspective of training programs with these characteristics.
Pre-course requirements
Degree in dentistry or stomatology
Access from other health branches will be assessed by the management of the Master's degree
Objectives
This master's program aims to ensure that students acquire the necessary knowledge to be able to carry out all types of dental treatments on patients with complex medical pathologies, systemic diseases with dental repercussions, polymedicated patients, elderly patients, disabled patients, whether or not they are cooperative, as well as knowing how to assess and identify all types of oral lesions either in the dental office, in closed institutions or in a hospital environment. All this with the acquisition of skills in the techniques of handling these patients such as conscious sedation techniques in the dental office or in a hospital environment under general anesthesia.

- To train dentists who are familiar with the medical and pharmacological pathologies that affect dental treatments in elderly and disabled patients.
- To train dentists who are capable of integrating into multidisciplinary teams for the elderly.
- To train dentists who are interested in research and the study of old age, disability and oral pathology.
- To train dentists who are capable of treating patients with medical or pharmacological conditions.
- To train dentists who are capable of knowing the diagnostic management and treatment of lesions of the oral mucosa.
