Introduction

The subject Financial Management deals with the interrelationship between a company's financing policy and investment decisions in the short term.

Pre-course requirements

There is none.

Objectives

Students learn the basics of business finance, with a special focus on the analysis and interpretation of financial statements, working capital management (the day-to-day financial management of the company) and the making and handling of financial projections. 

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • 13 - To be familiar with and understand the terms and processes of company management.
  • 15 - To acquire a solid knowledge of the main taxation models at a state, regional and local level.
  • 31 - To develop the ability to identify and interpret numerical data.
  • 34 - To develop the ability to predict situations and anticipate events, as well as be able to recognise and interpret an economic situation within a specific context.

Learning outcomes of the subject

At the end of the course, the student will be able to interpret and handle the different financial tools necessary for correct decision making in business management.

Introduction to finance. Basic concepts.

i. Basic concepts.

ii. Balance sheet and income statement.

iii. Operational and structural finance.

 

1. Financial analysis and diagnosis

i. Financial ratios.

ii. EOAF.

iii. Working capital.

iv. Operating cash requirements.

v. Basic models: growth, seasonality, negative FM.

2. Financial planning and forecasting

i. Income statement forecasting.

ii. Forecast of other liability items.

iii. Forecast of asset items.

iv. Cash flow forecast.

3. Financial asset management

i. Customer management.

ii. Inventory management.

iii. Cash management.

4. Management of short-term negotiated sources of funds.

i. Supplier management.

ii. Other spontaneous sources of funds.

iii. Cost of supplier credit.

iv. Other resources: confirming.

v. Choice criteria. The profitability approach.

The course will alternate theoretical sessions with practical classes in which the knowledge acquired will be applied to real cases.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



- Class attendance and participation: 5 %.
- Practical exercises: 20 %.
- Partial exam: 25 %.
- Final exam: 50 %.
