Introduction

In this subject, the most relevant ethical aspects in the practice of palliative care are presented, especially those related to attention to vulnerability and end-of-life situations.

Likewise, the fundamental aspects are worked on to develop a plan that gives satisfaction to the shared planning of care in situations of advanced disease with a holistic and integrative vision.

They are not necessary.

Objectives

  • Familiarize the student with the language of clinical ethics.

  • Apply ethical principles in an integrated manner in the care of patients and families.

  • Ask questions and establish discussion criteria around complex situations.

  • Know the main aspects that are part of shared care planning.

  • Highlight the transformative clinical impact of shared care planning.

  • Describe the shared care planning process.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN04 - Recognize the ethical issues in the situation of advanced disease.
  • CP01 - Work in a self-directed or autonomous manner in PC teams, formed by peers, specialists or not, and other professionals, respecting the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, the promotion of human rights and the values of a culture of peace and democratic values; using language that avoids androcentrism and stereotypes.
  • CP07 - Empathetically communicate bad news processes in a manner adapted to the informational needs of patients and their families taking into account their cultural background.
  • HB02 - Critically use diverse sources of information to formulate academic arguments in the field of palliative care.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of ethical issues in end-of-life care.

  • Know the shared care planning process.

Tema 3. Concepts and Criteria in Palliative Care. 

Tema 4. End-of-life Specific Issues (LET, proportionality…).

Tema 5. Advance Care Planning: Introductory Concepts.

Tema 6. Practical Application of Advance Care Planning.
