Introduction

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the area of Dentistry that deals
with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growth and maturation of
the craniofacial structures. The main responsibilities of orthodontic practice
include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of occlusal
abnormalities and associated bone and soft tissue disorders.
The Orthodontist must supervise the guidance of the dentition and the
relationship between its supporting structures to achieve and maintain
harmonious relationships between the face and the cranial structures that
provide the patient with optimal dento-facial physiology and aesthetics.
In the Clinical I subject, residents treat patients putting into practice all
theoretical and practical knowledge under the supervision of the teaching staff.

Pre-course requirements

Degree in Dentistry

Objectives

Treating patients with different malocclusions and with different orthodontic treatment techniques in the clinic

Treating multidisciplinary cases

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN01 - CN01. Identify the biological and general medical concepts related to the development of the dentition, facial growth, physiology and pathophysiology of the stomatognathic system along with developmental psychology of the growing and adult patient. The biology of tooth movement and the orthopedic effect of forces (dentofacial orthopedics). As well as the interrelationship with biomedical sciences.
  • CN02 - CN02. Recognize basic orthodontic topics, the entire diagnostic process and imaging and radiology techniques to be able to diagnose and treat any type of patient.
  • CN06 - CN06. Manage safety, health, administration and ethics in the orthodontic office.
  • CN07 - CN07. Actively participate in the different meetings of national and international Orthodontic societies.
  • HB01 - HB01. Treat orthodontic patients taking into account skeletal and dental development, pathophysiology of the stomatognathic system with all available appliances.
  • HB02 - HB02. Diagnose and design treatment plans with basic and advanced radiological imaging techniques.
  • HB06 - HB06. Plan and carry out all diagnostic procedures prior to orthodontic treatment in order to set objectives and design a treatment.
  • HB07 - HB07. Plan and execute orthodontic treatments based on the long-term effects and possible iatrogenic effects that may occur.
  • HB08 - HB08. Diagnose and treat patients with cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies.
  • HB09 - HB09. Diagnose and treat the need for orthodontic treatment combined with orthognathic surgery.
  • HB10 - HB10. Diagnose and treat orthodontic patients with periodontal pathology.
  • HB11 - HB11. Diagnose and treat multidisciplinary orthodontic patients combined with prosthetic and dental aesthetic treatments.
  • HB12 - HB12. Diagnose and treat orthodontic patients with craniomandibular dysfunction.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • - External Academic Practices (Clinical Practice) - CN01, CN02, CN06, CN07, HB01, HB02, HB03, HB06, HB07, HB08, HB09, HB10, HB11, HB12, CP01, CP02, CP04 - 1. interpret the patient's diagnostic records . 2. Prepare a correct diagnosis and treatment plan in orthodontics. 3. apply the use of different orthodontic appliances for the treatment of malocclusions. 4. resolve the different complications that appear throughout orthodontic treatment, 5. plan a correct retention strategy at the end of orthodontic treatment.

Syllabus

In this subject, the clinical care activity typical of a specialist in orthodontics will be developed. The training program will enable them to acquire the technical and diagnostic skills that an orthodontic specialist must possess. A level of anamnesis, oral examination and complementary examinations of an advanced and multidisciplinary nature will be required; and the performance of minimum treatments will be recommended, which will be distributed throughout the four semesters of the university master's degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. These treatments will be of an advanced nature, treating any type of malocclusion in any type of patient, regardless of the specific conditions of the patient due to health status, age or severity of the malocclusion. In this subject, the student will also learn, through theoretical classes, the diagnosis and treatment of the different malocclusions. As well as the retention of treatments and avoiding relapse.

This clinical activity will be carried out at the Clínica Universitària d’Odontologia.
