Introduction

Even with the great advances in preventive dentistry, dental caries remains the main reason why children’s patients go to the dental clinic. The differences between the anatomy of temporary and permanent dentition mean that restorative and pulper treatments are different for both dentitions.

Objectives

The objectives of pre-clinical practice are to practise, using audiovisual methods and phantoms, the techniques of diagnosis, prevention and treatment that will be used during clinical practice in pediatric dentistry. These objectives will be necessary to evaluate the knowledge of each student before performing the practices in the university clinic of dentistry (CUO) with patients.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • - Scientific Evidence and Diagnosis in Pediatric Dentistry - Knowledge - CN01, CN02, Skills - HB01, HB09, HB11, HB13, HB14 and HB15 Competencies - CP01, CP05, CP02, CP04 - Students will be able to correctly use the scientific terminology related to oral pathology and restorative dentistry in pediatric patients. - Students will be able to make public presentations on clinical cases, with all the diagnostic details and complementary examinations required. - Students will be able to acquire the necessary knowledge to propose treatment plans referenced and justified by scientific literature. - Students will be able to correctly complete a pediatric dentistry medical history. - Students will be able to handle the different materials most commonly used in different pediatric dentistry treatments. - Students will be able to correctly perform absolute isolation with a rubber dam and acquire the manual skills necessary to perform the main preventive, restorative and pulp treatments. - Students will be able to perform dental treatment on pediatric patients with correct pain and behavior control. - Students will be able to diagnose the oral and dental pathology that the pediatric patient may present. - Students will be able to apply the necessary knowledge to diagnose and treat any type of dental trauma, whether in temporary or permanent dentition. - Students will be able to apply the necessary knowledge to diagnose and treat pulp pathology, whether in temporary or permanent dentition.

Syllabus

The pre-clinical practices to be carried out shall be as follows:

- How to make a good medical history. Know the content of the consent used in the CUO i how it has to be filled out correctly.

- Know the main radiographic techniques i know how to perform them in the child patient.

- Know the main prevention guides with clinical cases.

- Learn to perform the main anesthetic techniques, the material used in the child patient and the main techniques of control of behavior during the procedure.

- Printing and Base Drawing. Introduction to digital scanning.

- Learn to perform different techniques of absolute isolation.

- Know the different types of sealing, which patients are indicated and how they are performed.

- Learn how to perform the different types of cavities caused by caries lesions, the alternatives of materials to be used and to perform a good dental anatomy.

- Know the indications and contraindications of pulp treatments, how they are made and how the materials to be used are prepared.

- To know in which cases the metal and acetate crowns are indicated, and learn their correct placement.

- Learn to wax anterior teeth for subsequent reconstruction in cases of trauma.

- Remember and practice the main stitches.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



The practice will consist of three parts each day:

- An explanation by the teacher responsible for the practice.

- A bibliographical search by the students of procedures and/or materials related to the practice of that day.

- Practice with children’s phantoms in the laboratory.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



Each day of training will be evaluated with a score from 0 to 10. Attendance is compulsory. Only a fault caused by illness, accident and/or death of a family member is considered to be justified. In the case of justified failure, the student must send a certificate to the teacher.

At the end of all practical work in the subject, a theoretical and practical examination will be held in the laboratory.

- The practical exam will consist of performing procedures that have been practiced during the course. This part will count for 80% of the exam grade.

- The theoretical examination will consist of 10 short-answer questions on the theory of the practices taught. This part will count for 20% of the exam grade.

 

The final grade for the subject will consist of the average of the internship (50%) and the examination mark (50%).
