Introduction

This course provides a comprehensive picture of nanotechnology and its role in cosmetic industry.

We will explore the key elements of this discipline, from its historical evolution and foundational principles, focusing on relevant dimensions in the cosmetic industry, covering the types of nanomaterias and nanoformulations used, their synthesis and characterization techniques, and finally studying current market and regulatory considerations. By integrating theoretical knowledge and practical case studies, the course aims to equip students with the expertise to manage innovative cosmetic solutions using nanotechnology.

Objectives

  • Understand the principles and foundations of nanotechnology and incorporate them as a tool to solve challenges in the cosmetics industry.
  • Learn about the types of nanomaterials and nanoformulations in cosmetics, their synthesis techniques and their characterization techniques.
  • Analyze the safety, regulatory frameworks and ethical considerations related to nanotechnology in cosmetics.
  • Promote innovation and nanotechnology as a tool to solve real challenges in the cosmetics market.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Competences
  • CE3. Have the ability to understand and use bioengineering methodologies, new technologies and tools in the research, development and manufacturing of cosmetic products.
  • CE4. Acquire the essential skills to perform in the cosmetics manufacturing sector, including knowledge of production processes and quality control in the cosmetics industry.
  • CE5. Know the regulations and standards in the cosmetic industry, as well as know how to evaluate manufacturing systems and processes, and know how to carry out quality control of them.
  • CE6. Integrate the fundamentals of materials science and technology, nanotechnology and 3D printing for their application in modern cosmetics, in addition to knowing how to apply artificial intelligence tools for the design of new cosmetic products.
  • CE7. Apply bioengineering methodologies for the production of innovative ingredient release systems for use in cosmetics.
Learning outcomes
  • RA2. Understand and use bioengineering tools, such as 3D printing, artificial intelligence, or the use of materials, for innovation in the research, development and manufacturing of cosmetic products.
  • RA5. Think and act critically and responsibly during the research, development and manufacturing of cosmetic products, keeping in mind ethical issues arising from the world of cosmetics.
  • RA7. It is independent to carry out research and development projects of innovative cosmetic products applying new Bioengineering technologies.
  • RA8. He works normally in part of interdisciplinary work teams where he contributes his knowledge and the new technologies of Bioengineering in the production of cosmetic products.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Critically examine current innovations and market trends in nanotechnology for cosmetics, identifying challenges and opportunities.
  • Collaborate and present practical projects that demonstrate advanced concepts and applications of nanotechnology in the cosmetic field.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



  • The course will include a combination of lectures, individual assignments, and group projects where students will tackle the problems and challenges presented during the class.
  • English will be the primary language of instruction.
  • Students will submit their evaluation exercises via the Moodle platform.
  • Each theoretical ECTS credit comprises 10 hours of in-person instruction, with the remaining 15 hours allocated to guided and independent student learning. This independent workload will involve self-directed tasks and collaborative group work.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



The evaluation system will consist of an individual case study exercise related to the theory that will respond to questions introduced during the master classes, and the preparation of a group work to bring together the information on the challenges presented in class. The group work will be evaluated by delivering a report and an oral defense. The evaluation of the oral defense includes participation in the form of questions and debate in the oral presentations of the other groups. In-person attendance at weekly lessons is mandatory.

Individual memory: 60%

Group work: 40% - report (20%) oral defense (20%)

 

The oral presentation of the group work will be on Tuesday, 23rd February 2025 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Each presentation will last 15 minutes + 15 minutes of questions and debate. The deadline for submitting the report will be Monday, February 22 at 11:59 p.m.

 

Important Considerations for Exams and Assignments

  • Plagiarism, copying, or any other action that can be considered cheating will result in a zero for that evaluation component.
  • Doing so in exams will lead to immediate failure of the course.
  • In second-chance exams, the highest grade students can receive is "Excellent," without the possibility of earning honors.
  • No changes will be accepted to the schedule, exam dates, or evaluation system.
