Introduction
Thermal, acoustic and lighting systems and their corresponding installations form part of the basic requirements for buildings.
The growing importance and complexity of installations in buildings is increasingly forcing architects to collaborate with specialists in these fields.
Thus the architect, as the planner and project manager, should have sufficient basic knowledge of building installations and the regulations governing them to perform his or her function as a coordinator for the entire construction process.
The Installations 1 course encompasses energy, air-conditioning, water supply and drainage installations, all of which are understood as being an integral part of the architectural project.
The spirit of this course is to internalize the logic of each of the installations so that they become part of the architectural design process from the beginning, learning to anticipate spaces and to make buildings more interesting and intelligent containers.
Classes will be held with high participation from students and with a practical block in which the acquired knowledge will be shared, and an exercise will be carried out for each installation.
The goal of this practice is for students to experience something close to a submission in an office, where they will need to share knowledge and skills among all members, with each one becoming a teacher to the others based on their acquired knowledge.
Pre-course requirements
There are no specific pre-course requirements, but students are asked to come to class having read the recommended notes and with the necessary working materials.
Objectives
To facilitate students’ integration of the rich and complex field of environmental conditioning in the design process of their projects.
To help students understand the fundamental physical concepts that determine environmental comfort and the interrelationship between the different installations necessary to achieve this level of comfort within a building.
To equip students with the ability to judge the dimensions of installations at the planning phase with the aim of anticipating and controlling the spaces needed for the equipment and conduits of installations.
To develop students’ capacity to draw up the project documentation necessary, both written and graphic, to undertake a building project.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- 16-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes and execute installations for the supply, treatment and evacuation of water, central heating and air-conditioning systems.
- 17 - Ability to apply building and technical standards
- 22 - Ability to plan building and urban installations for the transformation and supply of electricity, telecommunications systems, acoustic conditioning systems and artificial lighting.
- 23 - Ability to preserve installations.
Learning outcomes of the subject
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
-Design a project, taking into account its installations and the regulations and standards that govern them.
-Pre-dimension the relevant installations in line with the proposed use of the building.
-Integrate and manage the different technical projects in the architectural project.

The themed teaching blocks will start with theory sessions accompanied by guided individual practical assignments.
Each block will finish with a group practical session.

Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
The student’s evaluation will be based on three aspects:
1. Continuous individual assessment by means of supervised practical assignments
2. Appraisal of group practical sessions
3. Final theory examination
By the end of the term, the student will obtain a grade resulting of the arithmetic mean of the different practical exercices and a grade from the exam.
The final grade will be obtained by the weighed average obtained by the 70% of the practical grade and 30% of the exam's grade.
