Introduction

Journalistic Language I is a 6 ECTS-credit subject taught during the 2nd semester of year one of the Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and contributes and forms the basis of Audiovisual Journalism’s academic curriculum. As a result, and together with other subjects taken in year one, this subject helps prepare students for the second year subject Television Communication.

The aim of this subject is to ensure that students acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills of journalistic language and, more specifically, audiovisual journalism. In this sense, Journalistic Language I introduces students to both the specific theoretical and practical characteristics of the elements that constitute the particular codes of audiovisual language, as well as the techniques and routines of newswriting.

This subject therefore provides students a theoretical background and enables them to experience the specific characteristics of audiovisual information and the day-to-day tasks of working in the news service of a television channel.

The subject also aims to ensure that students are capable of reflecting on the professional and social environment in which they will work and critically analysing  journalistic content. Journalistic Language I, in addition to the formal programme, will also introduce, in a cross-cutting manner, the topics and skills required to give future journalists comprehensive instruction.
