Introduction

This course introduces the fundamental writing skills needed to develop the language of academic/scientific discourse in English.

The academic writing module has been designed to meet the needs of non-native English-speaking students and academics who wish to improve their academic writing skills in order to produce work of a comparable standard to a native speaker. The syllabus focuses on the fundamental aspects of scientific writing at sentence and paragraph level. The guidelines will teach students how to distinguish between sub-standard and acceptable discourse, while the quizzes, exercises, writing assignments and other elements will serve to consolidate the theory. The acquired knowledge and practice will equip students with the necessary skills to communicate in a suitable scholarly style as well as increase their confidence in order to express themselves in a language comprehensible to their English-speaking peers/audience.

Students should preferably have an overall B2 level of English before the start of the course.
