Introduction

This course aims to introduce students to the methods and techniques of quantitative and qualitative research applied in palliative care that allow advancing knowledge in this specialty, as well as to provide ethical criteria that guide the task of clinical research with patients (and family) with advanced disease.

The aim is to enable students to develop and carry out research projects in palliative care. In addition, they will learn the criteria to be taken into account in order to develop ethically upright projects that respect the person, family and situation of special vulnerability due to their illness.

Pre-course requirements

Not required.

Objectives

Objectives:

● Train students in the principles of applied clinical research in palliative care and the design of research projects in PC.

● To formulate research questions in PC, design scientific literature search strategies and implement them in different databases.

● To provide the theoretical, methodological and instrumental bases for quantitative and qualitative research applied to palliative care.

● To increase the ability to analyze and critically read scientific articles in palliative care.

● To identify the specific characteristics of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs.

● To know the different techniques for obtaining and analyzing data.

● Know the criteria for rigor in quantitative and qualitative research.

● To identify the ethical aspects that govern research and are indispensable in applied research in palliative care.

● To know the international laws that regulate research ethics.

● To enable students to design a research study and conduct a research protocol.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN06 - Describe the principles and methods of advanced PC research.
  • CP01 - Work in a self-directed or autonomous manner in PC teams, formed by peers, specialists or not, and other professionals, respecting the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, the promotion of human rights and the values of a culture of peace and democratic values; using language that avoids androcentrism and stereotypes.
  • CP02 - Apply the principles of intellectual honesty and scientific integrity in the professional field of PCs.
  • CP03 - Independently carry out tasks in the area of PC according to the protocols established for this purpose.
  • CP09 - pply solutions to problems that may arise when carrying out tasks in the field of PCs.
  • HB02 - Critically use diverse sources of information to formulate academic arguments in the field of palliative care.
  • HB03 - Integrate multidimensional care to the problems of patients in advanced illness.

Learning outcomes of the subject

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

3.1 Identify the advanced methodological aspects of scientific research in palliative care.

3.2 Adequately apply the tools of literature search in the field of palliative care.

3.3 Formulate research questions in palliative care and design a research protocol.
