Domènec Melé, new member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors

Domènec Melé, a former lecturer at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at UIC Barcelona and current member of the Ethics of Economics and Business research group, joined the Royal European Academy of Doctors (RAED) on 9 April. The event took place in the function room at the Foment del Treball. The admission speech was answered by the academic Francesc Torralba, PhD in Theology

In his speech, titled “Ethos of Business Management: a humanist perspective centred on the individual”, Melé analysed different theories of management which are not based on a sufficiently rounded idea of the individual.

Accordingly, Melé introduced the concept of humanistic management, a more person-centred perspective. The scholar gave some clues to what he considers this person-centred humanistic vision to be. “You have to see each person,” Melé said, “as someone unique, conscious and free. Just as we must see the company as a community of people who, in different ways, contribute to the common good.”

On behalf of the Royal European Academy of Doctors, the numerary member Francesc Torralba was responsible for answering the admission speech. Torralba, in addition to reviewing the academic career of Domènec Melé, spoke about the moment of technological disruption that we are currently experiencing and the importance of “executive decision-making bodies,” that ethical criteria are being used and not only guided by the logic of maximum profit and minimum cost.”

Dr Domènec Melé was lecturer of Business Ethics  at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at UIC Barcelona between 2006 and 2016. He is currently a member of the SGR Research Group on the “Ethics of Economics and Business”, coordinated by Miquel Bastons since 2008. He is also a member of the scientific committee of the Chair for Management by Missions and Corporate purpose at UIC Barcelona.
