Ruggero Colombari reflects on the impact of ChatGPT in the classroom, two years after its launch
Writing in the VIA Empresa newspaper, Ruggero Colombari, lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, has analysed the opportunities and challenges that generative artificial intelligence has brought about in the learning process.
As the author explains, the irruption of these tools has challenged traditional educational practices, such as conventional exams or individual assignments, forcing a rethinking of the role of teachers and students. In this context, UIC Barcelona has been at the forefront of educational transformation with the ALFA (AI Literacy For All) project, launched by the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences in 2023 to study these tools and educate teachers and students in the ethical and critical use of these technologies.
Colombari also highlights UIC Barcelona's participation in the ChatGPT Global Survey, one of the most comprehensive studies on the impact of this technology in higher education, with over 23,000 responses from students around the world, revealing some interesting data on its use.
Conclusions for the future
Colombari's article also identifies the main lessons learned after two years of using this technology in the classroom. According to the author, it is essential to design academic activities that integrate AI in a constructive way, fostering skills such as critical thinking and the ability to discern between relevant and superfluous information.
He also stresses the importance of teacher training as being key to leading this transformation. Teachers need to understand the possibilities and limitations of tools such as ChatGPT so that they can develop methodologies that combine technological efficiency with meaningful learning.
A new stage for higher education
In conclusion, Colombari argues that the future of education is not only about adopting new technologies, but also about rethinking how education is taught. With a shared vision and commitment to innovation, UIC Barcelona continues to lead the way in exploring the potential of artificial intelligence to enrich learning, ensuring that this tool complements, not replaces, the academic and human development of students.
