Introduction

In the Master's Final Work (MFW) students have to implement independently for all skills and learning about research results acquired during the Master with tutoring from a teacher. Sometimes making MFW poses some difficulties for students at different levels, particularly in the methodological or statistical.

This course aims to strengthen methodological advice of skills and competences acquired on research methodology in the different subjects of the Master to carry out the MFW. In addition, it is intended that students learn to use the existing methodological advice service in many health care centers as a research support system. Students will have discussions on methodological design with the teachers of the subject.

Pre-course requirements

You need to be enrolled in the subjects: Final Master’s Degree, Biostatistics II and Qualitative Health Research Methodology.

The student must have passed the subjects: Biostatistics I and Quantitative Clinical Research Designs.

   

Objectives

  1. Submit appropriate statistical methods to achieve the goals outlined in the Master Final Work (MFW) with quantitative designs. 
  2. Provide appropriate statistical software for analysis for quantitative studies.
  3. To train students to analyze their own research studies, both qualitative and quantitative.
  4. To provide adequate methodological support for the design of qualitative studies, as well as for their justification.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN01RA - Identify the ethical, legislative and humanitarian foundations of research in salut.

  • CP01RA - Design an advanced research project on clinical aspects following ethical standards and scientific rigor and respecting the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, and the promotion of human rights and values ​​typical of a culture of peace and democratic values, using a language that avoids androcentrism and stereotypes.
  • CP02RA - Work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team on a research project clinical.
  • CP03RA - Communicate the stages of a clinical research project to the public specialized and non-specialized clearly and unambiguously
  • HB01RA - Apply the scientific method, research design, advanced biostatistics and quantitative and qualitative data analysis tools to solve a question or test a hypothesis in the clinical setting.
  • HB02RA - Use tools to critically evaluate projects, protocols and research articles, both qualitative and quantitative, in the field of Health Sciences
  • HB03RA - Apply different bibliographic search strategies in a research project clinical research from the main databases in life sciences health.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Students will be able to summarize in tabular form, graphically or numerically, categorical data, counts and continuous variables.
  • Be able to use conditional probabilities and how to interpret as a sign of the goodness of a diagnostic test applied in usual terms such as specificity, sensitivity, and predictive values of the test.
  • Will recognize what statistical technique applied in some common experimental situations and problems of one and two samples.
  • Know to make an estimation problem in terms of a confidence interval (from a median, a difference of medium, a proportion) and know how to use the information to make decisions.
  • Know to apply the calculation of sample size needed to guarantee a precision fixed a priori in any of the above ranges.
  • Know how to use a computational tool that machined the different calculations, interpret their lists and draw conclusions.
  • Be able to determine the statistical methods needed to answer the scientific question that arises when you take to complete a research study.
  • Be able to answer a research question from the statistical point of view.
  • Be able to perform and justify the analysis of data generated by their research.
  • Be able to justify and write the qualitative design method appropriate to its objective.

Syllabus

The contents of the course will depend on the objectives in different TFM and will reinforce the content of the subjects:

  • Bioestatistics I and II.
  • Quantitative Clinical Research Designs
  • Qualitative Research Methodology in Health.
 

Teaching and learning activities

Online



Classes will consist in methodological and statistical advice for the group and individual of the WFM that the students are doing. Two group sessions will be performed: at the beginning of the course and in the end; and two individual sessions in-between.

The groupal and individual sessions will be through online system. The dates will be agreed with the students.

The student will have their defined work, research objectives, data collection techniques... and statistical data analysis approach. This approach to the subject teacher will be presented and both (student-teacher) will set the pace of work in order to improve this aspect of the work.

Joint Evaluation of 2 components:

  1. Continuous assessment (30%): the work presented in each of the tutorials in relation to the objectives will be assessed.
  2. Evaluation of the final result presented in the last group tutoring (70%): the student must submit the section on MFWs and defend it in front of other students in group mentoring.
