Introduction
Health and Development will introduce the student to global health main concepts, through a public health nursing perspective. This class will offer the students a general content on globalization and determinants of health, health burdens, the epidemiology behind communicable and noncommunicable disease, maternal/paternal and child health and nutrition, socioeconomic status and health.
All these concepts will be applied through an individual project based on a community health assessment in order to holistically, and critically comprehend the nursing role and interventions in a globalized world.
Pre-course requirements
If there are students in self-isolation due to the COVID-19 health and safety measures, who cannot physically attend class at the University like their peers, teaching staff will carry out online teaching during this isolation period only so that the student(s) in question can attend their classes online. The rest of the students will have to attend their classes in person in the classroom.

Explore different scenarios around international health.

Learn the nursing professional roles and responsibilities to develop community interventions that seek to promote community health and disease prevention.

Critically assess the impact that different determinants of health have on health-disease binomium at a global level, and with special focus into maternal and child health.

Critically appraise international health ethics. Especially related to the European Commission of organs, blood, tissues & cells in the EU.

Identify the principles of assessing, planning, developing, and implementing strategic interventions to promote community’s health.

This course opts for a totally in person modality. Although it can be modified into a blended/semipresencial or even totally online format, according to public health recommendations to prevent Covid-19 transmission. For all the other modalities, we have institutional support through technology and moodle platform.

To pass this class it is compulsory to achieve a minimum of 5 in the group work. Furthermore, students must have a final score of minimum 5 to pass.
Students which activities don't exceed the minimum grade of 5, thus must attend to second evaluation. This will be assessed through a multi-question exam test.
Honor Matrix Assignment Procedure (MH)
- The criterion for assigning Honorary Enrolments (MH) is based on the Excellent (9.0).
- The assignment is solely for the teacher and does not have to give it, even if the student has obtained a mark above 9.0.
- In case the teacher decides to award MH, he will not take into account the numerical mark and the highest, but will evaluate other factors. The HM might not match the highest numeric score.
Procedure for Non-presented Assignment (NP)
- To register an NP in the student's file, it must not have been submitted to any of the evaluation tests throughout the assignment.
- If a student has submitted to one of the evaluation tests, the corresponding percentages in the teaching guide will be applied, with a 0 in those not presented.
