Introduction

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the area of Dentistry that deals with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growth and maturation of craniofacial structures. The main responsibilities of orthodontic practice include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of occlusal anomalies and associated alterations of bones and soft tissues.

The Orthodontist must supervise the guidance of the dentition and the relationship between its support structures to achieve and maintain harmonious relationships between the face and cranial structures that provide the patient with optimal dentofacial physiology and aesthetics.

To develop his activity, the orthodontist must have a basic knowledge of biology and medicine that will be taught in this subject.

Pre-course requirements

In accordance with the provisions of section 3 of article 26 of Royal Decree 822/2021, of September 28, which establishes the organization of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality, the favorable report on the need and academic and social viability of the implementation of this university degree has already been sent to the General Secretariat of Universities, through the corresponding certificate, by the General Directorate of Universities of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Objectives

Provide the student with:

Knowledge of Pediatrics regarding the pathophysiology of growth and development and diseases that may affect orthodontic treatment.

Knowledge of anatomy and embryology of craniofacial growth.

Knowledge of genetics.

Knowledge of cellular and molecular biology.

Knowledge of oral pathology.

Knowledge of pharmacology.

Knowledge of psychology.

Knowledge of research methodology.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN01 - CN01. Identify the biological and general medical concepts related to the development of the dentition, facial growth, physiology and pathophysiology of the stomatognathic system along with developmental psychology of the growing and adult patient. The biology of tooth movement and the orthopedic effect of forces (dentofacial orthopedics). As well as the interrelationship with biomedical sciences.
  • CP04 - CP04. Apply advanced orthodontic treatments appropriately to any patient, respecting the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, and the promotion of human rights and the values of a culture of peace and democratic values; using language that avoids androcentrism and stereotypes.
  • HB04 - HB04. Identify the etiology and epidemiology of the main malocclusions. As well as the need and demand for orthodontic treatments in society.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • - Basic orthodontic concepts - CN01, CN02, HB01, HB02, CP01, CP02, CP04, CP05 - 1. Identify the physiological aspects of the development of the dentition, facial growth and the stomatognathic system in general. 2. Remember the biology of tooth movement and the orthopedic effect of forces (Dentofacial Orthopedics). 3. Manage radiology and basic imaging techniques in orthodontics (orthopantomography, cephalometry, periapical radiology). 4. Use the materials used in Orthodontics and their effect on the teeth and skeleton. 5. Remember the concepts of biomechanics in Orthodontics. 6. Identify the different types of cephalometric analysis. 7. Identify statistical methods and their applications in the field of Orthodontics. 8. Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research models, identifying the main advantages and limitations of both models.
