Introduction
The extraordinary evolution of surgery, anesthesia and resuscitation in recent years has made the surgical area a place within the hospital of a complexity that requires a significant degree of specialization, which requires motivated nursing professionals to work within this field the need to enjoy solid and specific training to develop daily tasks within this hospital service with leadership, competence and professionalism.
On the other hand, factors dependent on research and development, as well as the characteristics of the population and the improvement of social well-being call for a new approach in the work of the operating room nurse, which increases their strategic value within the surgical area:
• New technologies: minimally invasive surgery, intraoperative radiotherapy, new monitoring systems, surgical robotics, etc. that require permanent recycling.
• Short-stay surgery, with its specific characteristics of pre- and post-operative care.
• Geriatric surgery. Age in itself is not an impediment to surgical intervention, but the aging of the population requires surgical treatment of patients with added morbidity that require specific care.
• Emergency surgery. The implementation of pre-hospital emergency systems allows serious surgical patients to arrive at the hospital and require care that has not occurred until now.
• The humanization of healthcare. What place can be more appropriate than the operating room - where the patient will undergo a treatment that violates his physical integrity - where he will need emotional support more acutely. Therefore, it is necessary for nursing staff to play a key role in this humanization process.
Motivated by these concerns, the International University of Catalonia offers a Postgraduate Program in nursing to train Diplomas/Graduates in nursing with the basic objective of achieving the necessary knowledge and skills that prepare them to lead comprehensive care for surgical patients in the different specialties and in more depth to the nursing care of the patient undergoing anesthesia and the new technologies in the surgical field.
