The BIT has obtained funding for a valorisation project for treating infections with nanoparticles

The research led by Luis Delgado, a researcher at the Bioengineering Institute of Technology (BIT), has obtained funding within the framework of the UIC Barcelona Open Innovation | UICInnovació 2023 call, promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for Research Innovation and Knowledge Transfer of the University with the participation of Banco Santander, the government of Catalonia and the Catalan Family Foundation

The study “Engineered particles with antibacterial and bioactive capacity for resistant bacterial infections”, was developed by Delgado with José Antonio González and Daniel Moreno, researchers from the Faculty of Dentistry; and Elena Sánchez, pharmacology researcher at the University of Barcelona. As the researcher explains, “the main objective of the project is to develop a system of nanoparticles that allow the release of drugs for treating dental infections”.

To be specific, the team of researchers led by Luis Delgado has developed a drug release system using nanoparticles designed at the BIT, which they stress “is not only capable of fighting bacteria, but also allows the damaged tissue to be reconstructed”. Thanks to the funding received, the research will be able to expand and study the scope of intellectual protection, the adaptation of the product to the current market and the transfer to industry.

The UIC Barcelona Open Innovation| UICInnovació 2023 call is intended to finance projects for the valorisation of research results and is supported by Banco Santander, the government of Catalonia and the Catalan Family Foundation.

With this initiative, UIC Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to innovation and research in the field of health.
