Two professors from UIC Barcelona have designed the CaixaForum Malaga building
Felipe Pich-Aguilera and Teresa Batlle, professors at UIC Barcelona School of Architecture and leaders of the Pich Architects group, have directed the CaixaForum Malaga project, an iconic building that combines environmentalism and urbanism. The building will open in 2026
“It is not a building that occupies a place, rather it builds a place, it creates a landscape.” That is how Felipe Pich-Aguilera summed up the design proposal that “la Caixa” Foundation has chosen for CaixaForum Malaga. In a space measuring 9,417 m2, the new centre—to be built in Plaza Manuel Azaña—has been designed to be harmoniously integrated into the landscape and to have a positive impact.
The building, which according to Pich-Aguilera and Batlle will be a “new city landmark”, has an avant-garde and unique shape. The architectural complex, which is shaped like a droplet, is surely destined to become one of Malaga’s iconic buildings. In addition to its aesthetic design, the building has been conceived as a climate shelter, as it has been deliberately positioned along the entire path of the solar arch to protect itself from the sun. According to the architect, “CaixaForum Malaga showcases a reconfiguration in which progress and the environment are complementary terms”.
The inauguration of CaixaForum Malaga is scheduled for the end of 2026, with an investment of around €30 million. In addition to expanding cultural activities and providing new green spaces for the surrounding area, the building aims to be a place that is revitalising in both a physical and social sense. That is why the architects opted for a large outdoor garden that will be home to a variety of outdoor activities. Inside, there will be two large exhibition halls, an auditorium and multifunctional spaces on the first floor. The building will also have an immersive room, an educational space, a cafeteria and a bookshop.
