Introduction
By carrying out experimental work in the laboratory, the subject aims to introduce the student to the research activity in oral microbiology and, in particular, to the behaviour of microorganisms in mixed versus pure cultures. Acid production and lower pH are analysed under different growing conditions. It will reveal how natural conditions can be simulated in the laboratory in order to extract as much information as possible about what happens to the oral microbiota.
Pre-course requirements
None.
Objectives
Understand and know how to apply knowledge related to the principles of oral microbiology.
Know and be able to apply the main diagnostic tools of Molecular Biology
Know how to identify the most prevalent bacterial species in the oral cavity using different diagnostic techniques
Know the main lines of research in Oral Microbiology
Learning outcomes of the subject
The student has advanced knowledge of Microbiology
He has the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
Has the ability to integrate new knowledge acquired through research and study, and cope with complexity.
Has the capacity for self-learning in the development of new instrumental techniques, in the acquisition of new concepts in the field of microbiology and in the search for new scientific information.
Knows how to use and apply the most common laboratory techniques in microbiology.
Syllabus
- Introduction to Oral Microbiology
- Oral pathology of non-bacterial origin
- Periodontal pathology
- Endodontic pathology
- Molecular diagnosis techniques
Teaching and learning activities
In blended
The teaching methodology will consist of master classes , as well as case studies extracted from international scientific articles related to the subject. The CMs are complemented with didactic videos on the subject.
Some of the CM and MC, in the cased of blended teaching, will be performed via Collaborate in a synchronous mode and the session will be recorded to be available at any time. Original schedule of the classes will be mantained.
The training activities used for the assessment of the learning will consist of a commentary on a scientific article linked to the subject and an examination with open-ended questions on the entire content of the course. In the case of blended teaching some of the activities might be performed online.
The practical laboratory sessions will cover basic aspects of clinical microbiology and will focus on the design and conduct of a scientific experiment related to the oral microbiota.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In blended
Continous evaluation - EC (30%): participation in classe debates and online sessions, in Forum activities in the Moodle, etc.
Resolution of cases - RC (30%)
Final exam - PFE (40%)
Bibliography and resources
Provided by the teacher on the Moodle platform.
