Introduction
The aim of molecular and cellular pathology is to develop dentistry students’ interest and knowledge of genetic and molecular aspects of some human pathologies and new therapeutical approaches. The theoretical knowledge is complemented by activities and seminars, introducing the students to the techniques and terminology of top-level scientific research and promoting self-learning to be applied in their clinical practice.
Pre-course requirements
None.
Objectives
Show and provide the necessary tools to the students to:
- Understand and use in the future the theoretical content about molecular and cellular bases of some pathologies applied to odontology through examples of chromosomal, genetic and metabolic diseases, the molecular biology of cancer and cell death, and the microbiology.
- Find, understand, and interpret the molecular and cellular mechanisms related to diseases, disorders and/or therapeutic strategies.
- Understand, interpret, and effectively communicate knowledge from scientific articles in top-level of Molecular and Cellular Pathology.
Learning outcomes of the subject
The objective of Molecular and Cellular Pathology at the end of the course is that students will be able to:
- Know the molecular or/and cellular characteristics of some pathologies applied to odontology
- Integrate new knowledge through research and study and deal with complexity
- Apply the knowledge acquired to solving problems in a new or changing environment.
- Describe and recognize different methods of diagnosing pathological and therapeutic techniques
- Use correct scientific terminology in the field of Molecular and Cellular Pathology
- Find, organize, interpret and communicate scientific and medical information
Syllabus
The subject of Molecular Pathology is divided into 8 classes:
Chapter 1. Chromosomal disease: Down’s syndrome
Chapter 2. Genetic disease: Osteogenesis imperfecta
Chapter 3. Multifactorial disease: Diabetes. Antibiotic prevention
Chapter 4. Molecular biology of cancer: oral cancer
Chapter 5. Cell death: Biomaterials and toxicity
Seminar. Molecular and cellular pathology applied to dentistry
Teaching and learning activities
Online
a) Lecture and activities about every chapter
b) Seminar about molecular and cellular pathology applied to odontology
Evaluation systems and criteria
Online
70% Continuous evaluation (exercises)
30% Oral communication
Oral communication is mandatory.
To be able to make an average, you need to get at least a 5 in all the evaluated parts.
You can find the availability dates for each chapter (materials, activities and tests) on the Moodle.
