Cross-disciplinary workshop: Vienna

The Faculty of Humanities has organised a cross-disciplinary workshop which this year will focus on Vienna.  On 22 January, various experts will analyse the history of the Austrian city through art, architecture, philosophy, music and literature. 

The cross-disciplinary workshop will be useful since one day afterwards degree students will take a trip to the capital of Austria, on 23rd January. Thus students will learn about this historic central European country at first-hand. 

Programme: 

9.30 to 10 a.m. Welcome

10 a.m. “The appearance of art and modern architecture in Vienna”, by Alberto Estévez, director of the UIC Barcelona - School of Architecture. Estévez was also formerly a professor at the Universität für angewandte Kunst de Viena (University of the Applied Arts) from 1990 to 1998 and is a specialist in the Viennese Secession. 


11.00 - 11.30 a.m.
Coffee break


11.30-12.30 p.m.
  “The three generations of Viennese modernity”, by Josep Casals. Tenured lecturer at the University of Barcelona, History of Art department, specialist in aesthetics. Author of the book entitled: Afinidades Vienesas.

12.30-1.30 p.m. “The ambivalent relationship with Vienna in the memoirs of Hilde Spiel and Ruth Klüger”, by Rosa Pérez. Tenured lecturer in the Faculty of Language Studies at the University of Barcelona, specifically the department of German Studies. Specialist in Holocaust literature. 

1.30 - 3p.m. Lunch break

3-4 p.m. An approach to Mahler’s music” by Joan Grimalt. An orchestra director (University of Vienna), a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) and also in the Faculty of Humanities at UIC Barcelona. He is also a specialist in Gustav Mahler. 

4-5 p.m. “Ringstrasse Architecture”, by Joan Molet. Tenured lecturer at the University of Barcelona, in the History of Art department. Specialist in 19th century architecture.
