The Barcelona Royal Shipyards, currently the home of the Museu Marítim, will open its doors on Thursday, 19 July, at 7 p.m. to host the exhibition of the final degree projects from UIC Barcelona School of Architecture entitled “Barcel/on/a/line. Green urban strategies from river to river”. The exhibition which will be open to the public until Thursday, 26 July, includes projects which reimagine the seafront in Barcelona as a unitary system and which hopes to enhance the potential of the metropolitan coastline to allow it to fulfil its social, environmental and economic functions more effectively.

During the opening event, experts – Itziar González, architect and activist who won the international competition to remodel the Ramblas in Barcelona along with her 15-person km-ZERO team; Jordi Julià, president of the Knowledge Area of the Civil Engineers of Catalonia Association; Francesc Muñoz, lecturer in Urban Geography at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since 1995 and director of the Urban Planning Observatory at the university; and Maria Sisternas, cofounder of Mediaurban, MSc City Design and Social Sciences for the LSE and regular contributor to the Diari Ara – participated in a dialectic meeting which aims to encourage a reflection on the present and future of the Barcelona coastline. It is an open debate exploring topics such as the appropriateness of involving the academic world in actions providing a real stage for territorial problems of today or possible strategies to be implemented in order to replan or reclaim a seafront threatened by problems such as growing levels of privatisation – a result of the exorbitant growth in tourism. The event will be moderated by Catalan designer and editor Óscar Guayabero. 

In addition to the singular inter-expert dialectic battle and coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, the Chair in Industrial Construction and the Environment (CEIM) at UIC Barcelona School of Architecture will be handed out, recognising the projects with the most innovative solutions in the area of sustainability. This will be followed by the presentation of the Schindler Lifts Accessibility Awards to the Final Degree Projects (TFGs) that most successfully integrate accessibility architecturally.
