CaixaForum Barcelona. Av. Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 6-8, 08038 Barcelona

On Thursday 11 February 2016 at 7 p.m. Dr Judith Urbano from the School of Architecture at UIC Barcelona, will give a talk entitled ‘Non-Modernist Barcelona, the work of August Font i Carreras [1845-1924)’ at the CaixaForum in Barcelona. The aim of the talk is to find out about and re-evaluate works in this city from the turn of the century which did not follow the Modernist trend.

Highly famous while alive and with a portfolio full of important clients and commissions (the façade and dome of Barcelona Cathedral, the Plaza de Toros Las Arenas, the Palacio de las Heures, the Maison Dorée, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes for the Universal Exhibition in 1888, and various branches of La Caja de Ahorros and Monte de Piedad) August Font i Carreras (1845-1924) was not critically acclaimed. In fact some of his buildings have even been torn down.  Barcelona, which is so widely known for its Modernist architecture, still needs to re-evaluate other buildings and architects from the turn of the century who did not follow this trend, but who experimented with other elements and materials with the aim of finding a new architectural style for a new century. Is is necessary to study their work and recognise the important role they play in the city we live in today.
