Foros 2019 | Addenda Architects: "Building Emptiness"

UIC Barcelona School of Architecture

On 25 March, the Barcelona-based studio Addenda Architects, whose members include Roberto González, Anne Hinz, Cecilia Rodríguez, Arnau Sastre and José Zabala (a former student of the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture), will take part in the 2019 Foros lecture series, during which they will present their project for the Bauhaus Dessau Museum, due to open on 8 September.

Addenda Architects’ proposal was chosen from among the 830 projects submitted as part of the international competition organised by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation to build a museum in which to house the collection of this historical school, which revolutionised art and architecture in the 20th century. According to the members of the Barcelona-based studio, “the most significant aspect of this pragmatic, austere design is the subtle reincarnation of the Bauhaus spirit, summed up in Mies Van der Rohe’s famous oxymoron ‘less is more’. In regards to certain specific characteristics of the Bauhaus school in Dessau (the glass curtain wall, the two-storey bridge and the general feeling of transparency, light and flat surfaces), the new museum will include a manifesto of contemporary culture that could most accurately be described ‘low resolution at its finest’”.

This year, Foros, an annual series of lectures about architecture, revolves around the title “Identities”. Its programme looks to contribute to the debate on the concept of identity in contemporary architecture, strongly marked by the present trends in globalisation. For the second straight year, the series has been organised in partnership with BBConstrumat.
