Foros 2021 | Jorge Gorostiza: “A portrayal: Architects on the big screen”
On 15 April at 7 p.m., architect and film buff Jorge Gorostiza will take part in the Foros series of lectures with his talk “A portrayal: Architects on the big screen”. The lecture will be accompanied by two films screenings to be held at the Filmoteca de Catalunya*: The Belly of an Architect on 13 April at 7.15 p.m., and My architect on 14 April at 7 p.m. Both screenings will be presented by Jorge Gorostiza, who will delve into the relationship between cinema and architecture and, in particular, the way in which the architect’s profession has been portrayed on the big screen.
“Among the thousands of films that explore this relationship, we have chosen two examples that are very different from one another. The first, The Belly of an Architect, tells the story of the problems encountered by peculiar American architect curating an exhibition in Rome in the 1980s. The second, My Architect, is a documentary directed by the son of the well-known architect Louis I. Kahn, who looks at and discovers how in reality, he knew very little about his father. It is narrated from an admirably critical point of view. Both films allow us to compare two ways of portraying fiction and reality, and at the same time, learn how cinema and society in general perceive architects”, he explains.
Jorge Gorostiza has published numerous articles and books on film and architecture since the 1990s and, between 2000 and 2005, he worked as the director of the Filmoteca Canaria. He sits on the juries of several film festivals and gives lectures in schools of architecture and at cultural centres across Spain.
Under the title “Expectations”, Foros 2021 will open the floor to discussions on reconstruction projects that have emerged as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, across all areas of society, with a particular focus on architecture and urban planning.
