On 9 February, the new UIC Barcelona School of Architecture lecture series Foros will open with a talk entitled “The dissolution of functional typology”. It will address the accelerated transformation of housing requirements (housing models, workspaces, urban space and even places of leisure) to respond to the inexorable renewal of the socio-economic reality. This first lecture will be given by Luis Basabe and Rosa Rull, and will be moderated by architect and UIC Barcelona lecturer Iñigo Ugalde.

Luis Basabe is a founding partner of the architecture and urban planning firm ARENAS BASABE PALACIOS ARQUITECTOS, together with Enrique Arenas and Luis Palacios. The Madrid-based firm, which operates in several European countries, has won numerous international awards, such as the Holcim Award Bronze Europe (2014) or the international EUROPAN competition, in which it is a six-time winner. Luis Basabe has also lectured on Architectural Projects at the ETSAM since 2003 and is a member of the “Cultura del habitat” research group. He has also been a visiting lecturer in Architecture and Urban Design at the prestigious Politecnico di Milano and at numerous universities in Europe, Mexico and India. He is also a member of the scientific committee of the journal Planum in Milan. 

Rosa Rull is a founding partner, alongside architect Manuel Bailo, of the Bailo Rull Arquitectura – + ADD Arquitectura studio, created in Barcelona in 1990. The studio is dedicated to projects of various scales in the fields of architecture, urban planning and interior design. Her work is characterised by its strong presence in the landscape, the result of careful strategic operations that forge a relationship between the building and its surroundings, guaranteeing its continuity and sustainability. Rosa Rull has been a lecturer in the subjects Projects and Final Degree Projects at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture; in Projects at the Escola Politècnica Superior at the University of Girona, and lecturer in Interior Design Projects and Final Degree Projects at the Escuela BAU. She has also led several architecture workshops and given conferences both in Spain and internationally. 

Foros is an annual lecture series on architecture and urban planning, which this year will be held under the title “The leap into the void”. This new series calls for self-awareness regarding architecture today in its different aspects and fields of application. As a new feature, the lecture series is introducing a new format based on a two-way dialogue between professionals from the sector who will partake in sessions structured by themes linked to current architectural practice and the challenges facing the sector.
