Guided tour of the Monastery of Sant Cugat (in English)

Faculty of Humanities Monastery of Sant Cugat

UIC Barcelona is taking part in the European Year of Cultural Heritage with a guided tour of the precincts of the Monastery of Sant Cugat. This tour is included in the University Master's Degree in Cultural Management run by theFaculty of Humanities at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya.

The monastery, founded in the 9th century, is one of the the best examples of medieval art in Catalonia and is the symbol of the city. In the middle ages, the Monastery of Sant Cugat was the most powerful in the County of Barcelona. The monastery was built on the site of an old church built in the 5th century, where legend has it that the martyr Cugat is said to be buried.

The cloister is considered to be a jewel of Romanesque sculpture, one of the most important in Europe and one of the best preserved. It is of particular note due to the structure and decoration of the 144 unique chapiters. The church is an ideal spot where you can clearly see the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style.
