Guided tour to the University Area in Diagonal

UIC Barcelona School of Architecture Ferrer i Guàrdia Monument

On 13 May, Iñigo Ugalde, a Projects and Critical Thought lecturer in the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, will give a guided tour of three of the most prominent buildings from the Northern Sector of the University Area on Diagonal, which were part of the urban planning project aimed at extending what is today Avinguda Diagonal in the 1950s. The tour, which is free for anyone interested in participating, has been organised as part of the 2019 Barcelona Architecture Week.

The meeting point will be the Ferrer Guàrdia monument, near the entrance to the Old Higher School of Business Studies, currently part of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Barcelona. This building was the first designed by Javier Carvajal in the city of his birth.

The tour will continue on to the Old Faculty of Political, Economic and Commercial Sciences, the work of architects Giràldez, Subías and López Íñigo. The building, currently integrated into the Faculty of Economics and Business, opened its doors in 1967 and was nominated for a FAD Architecture Award.

The route will end with a tour of the Faculty of Law, a building also developed by the team of Giràldez, Subías and López Íñigo. The project was named winner at the first edition of the FAD awards in 1958 and has since become an icon of modern architecture in Barcelona and of the more formalistic sector of the so-called “R Group”.

Iñigo Ugalde Blázquez is an architect specialised in 20th-century architecture in the city of Barcelona.
