Metabolic Materiality
Metabolic Materiality is an innovative course that combines architecture, research, and professional practice. We will explore the relationship between materials, infrastructure, and the city from a sustainable perspective, seeking solutions to 21st-century challenges. The course, focused on concrete, will provide a multidisciplinary perspective through lectures by experts in various fields.
The course is an elective for students at ESARQ – School of Architecture at UIC Barcelona and is open to students from other universities as a continuing education course.
This first edition of the course will run every Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. from January to March 2025, with a final presentation in June. The course will kick off with a visit to the CEMEX facilities in Switzerland from 14 to 16 January.

UIC offers a course that integrates architecture firms, research, and university. The course is designed with a research focus on materiality, infrastructure, and the city from an integral sustainability perspective. The programme aims to explore new future scenarios to offer perspectives and ways of inhabiting that integrate both people and surrounding ecosystems. In response to the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century, materiality is conceived as a catalyst for these emerging scenarios, particularly concrete. The course seeks to explore architecture through a multidisciplinary lens and will feature lectures from anthropologists, engineers, biologists, among others.

Prerequisites & admissions
Entry profile
Students interested in architecture, design, engineering, environmental sciences, or similar fields. Being an architect is not necessary; we seek people eager to innovate and work in a multidisciplinary team to promote urban sustainability.
