90 Nursing students from UIC Barcelona out on the streets of Sant Cugat to promote healthcare among the general population

Students from the UIC Barcelona Nursing Degree recently spent time on the streets of Sant Cugat to attend to citizens who came along to one of the six information and healthcare stalls that were installed in different parts of the city. The event entitled “You have nursing, you have good health” organised for the fourth consecutive year on the International Nurses Day, which is held each year on 12 May, aims to raise awareness among the population about the importance of prevention and healthcare education as well as bringing nursing closer to the population as a whole.  Susana Pellicer, Deputy Mayor for Welfare and Citizenship, and Esther Salat, Councillor for Education, Universities and the Family from Sant Cugat del Vallés City Council, attended this edition of the event.

Around 90 Nursing students from first to fourth year, tutored by teachers from the degree programme, provided information of healthcare education and healthy habits between 9 am and 7 pm,: diet, exercise, etc, and also took and registered blood pressure and glucose levels for citizens who came to visit their stalls.  Apart from collecting this data, the students held interviews on healthy eating habits.  The data obtained from these four editions will be used by fourth year students themselves in order to create their final degree projects.  According to the Professor who is the coordinator for work experience, Pilar Fuster, “This activity was considered to be part of the student’s work placements and was a unique opportunity for them to come into contact with the population during a fun and friendly day”.
