Anna Barrios’ thesis project, winner of a grant from the Catalan-Balearic Society of Physiotherapy

The prize will enable her to further her research on Pusher Syndrome and its influence on stroke patients, a virtually unknown issue among health professionals and the public at large.

The thesis project submitted by Anna Barrios, a member of the UIC Barcelona Health Research Programme, was named winner of the 7th Catalan-Balearic Society of Physiotherapy Grant. The aim of this project is to provide help for subacute stroke patients suffering from Pusher Syndrome, which causes a loss of balance due to an altered perception of verticality and reality.

To do so, the project promotes a series of exercises involving laser visual feedback, which help improve patients’ balance and minimise recovery time, reducing the likelihood of a fall and their time in hospital and effectively improving the quality of life of the patients being treated.

In the words of the winner, “the fact this grant exists helps make the work easier for those of us just getting started in research. The fact that experts in neurology have noticed my thesis is also a source of motivation for my doctorate”.

“During this time, I’ve been supported by a wonderful group of people who I admire”, revealed Anna Barrios, in reference to Dr Cari Bagur and Montserrat Girabent, the directors of her thesis and lecturers in the Department of Physiotherapy.
