Antonio Gaudi’s technological innovations, analysed by Ricardo Gomez Val

The UIC Barcelona School of Architecture lecturer has delved into the technological legacy of Antoni Gaudi in an article for The Conversation. Gomez Val highlights how Gaudi revolutionised architecture through innovation in the use of materials and technology, exploring organic curves and the creative reuse of traditional materials

Ricardo Gómez Val shared his perspective on Antoni Gaudi’s innovative legacy in an article entitled “Antoni Gaudi’s technological innovations”, published in The Conversation. In his analysis, he highlights the importance of experimentation and attention to detail in the work of the iconic Catalan architect.

As the author explains, Antoni Gaudi used the observation of nature as a source of inspiration for his designs. In the middle of the industrial revolution, the architect knew how to use curved wood or natural stone to explore the limits of materials and create structures before their time. In addition to innovating in the use of components, he was also a pioneer in design and construction methodology, with techniques such as trencadís, in which he reused fragments of broken ceramic to create colourful mosaics.

Gomez Val’s research explores Gaudi’s innovations and highlights the importance of recognising his technological legacy. His great works, such as Parc Güell, Sagrada Família or La Pedrera, demonstrate the experimentation, care for detail and interest in innovation that accompanied the architect throughout his life. “Gaudi was an absolutely modern architect, we continue to learn from him today”, concludes the author.
