BAFTA industry sustainability manager gives a workshop to 4th year students

Roser Canela calculates the carbon footprint of productions and gives advice about how to raise awareness among spectators.

An electric car in an episode in of your favourite TV series, two actors recycling glass or a scene in which the main characters don’t use plastic bags in favour of other more sustainable ones.  These are small gestures that are almost imperceptible to viewers, but can help to consolidate a more sustainable social awareness.  Among other objectives, this was the aim of BAFTA industry sustainability manager Roser Canela who recently gave a workshop to fourth year Audiovisual Communication students.

She is Catalan but settled in the United Kingdom several years ago and currently holds a position abroad that does not exist in Spain, she is an industry sustainability manager. In other words, she is in charge of audiovisual production consultancy to which she contributes a green or sustainable element.  This can range from calculating carbon footprints to teaching courses on climate change to TV professionals.

Canela analyses each production filmed in the UK, apart from those directed by the BBC.  The rest all pass through her sustainability filter.  Her position will become more visible and necessary in the future, and 4th year Audiovisual Communication students were able to learn all about it over a period of a week. This year our students created a late night show.

“Roser shared her experience of the implementation of sustainable production methods with students, since this is very new in the field of television, but is now gaining momentum in countries such as the United Kingdom” explained Isadora García, a lecturer from the Faculty.
