“Bioethics is essential for both dentistry students and professionals”

Dr Lluís Giner, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, participated in the first Bioethics Meeting organised by the Spanish section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

On 9 March, the first Bioethics Meeting was held, instigated by the Spanish Pierre Fauchard Academy and organised by lecturer Carmen Llena from the University of Valencia and Dr José María Ustrell, president of the Spanish section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and vice-dean of the University of Barcelona.

Representatives of dentistry faculties from numerous universities participated in this event.  Attendees debated on four current aspects of their profession: “How to implement Bioethics into Dentistry classes?” “Ethical committees in professional societies”, “Business models for dental practices” and “In clinics, profitability and business ethics are compatible”.

“Changes in current society have taught us how to adapt to new situations, and bioethics has an important role to play in this. For that reason it is important for teachers to improve the bioethical concepts we transmit to future dentists in our universities” declared Dr Lluís Giner, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at UIC Barcelona, and one of the participants in the meeting.

Once the event was over, representatives of the Spanish section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the main scientific dentistry organisation in the world, suggested that the next edition of the Bioethics Meeting should be held at UIC Barcelona.
