On Thursday 8 November, the Sant Cugat Campus hosted the third edition of the Thanksgiving Event for Body Donors and Updates in Anatomy. The event, organised by the Body Donation Service at UIC Barcelona, brought together donors and their family members, along with medicine, physiotherapy and dentistry students, and also featured a number of health industry professionals.
The dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr Albert Balaguer, was the person charged with welcoming the over 190 attendees. His remarks were followed by Dr Albert Pérez, coordinator of the Body Donation Service, who thanked the body donors for their incredible gesture and stressed the importance of this selfless act with regards to medical breakthroughs and for training future doctors, physiotherapists and dentists.
The event featured a number of medical professionals, who, in their talks, brought attendees up to speed on the most recent scientific developments in the areas of anatomy, traumatology and ophthalmology. The first talk was by Paul Fauris, a physiotherapy student and anatomy resident, who presented the study “Effect of electrostimulation on hamstring flexibility”. His presentation was followed by Dr Carlos López de Celis, lecturer and researcher in the Department of Physiotherapy at UIC Barcelona; Dr Roberto Seijas, traumatologist and researcher at the García-Cugat Foundation and Hospital Quirón and anatomy lecturer; Dr José Lamarca, ophthalmologist at the Barraquer Clinic, general coordinator of the Barraquer University Institute and lecturer and researcher at UIC Barcelona; Dr Hèctor Parellada and Dr Guillermo Rocafort, anatomy lecturers and researchers at the University; and Dr Xavier Escribano, lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities at UIC Barcelona, who shared their experiences.
The event concluded with a summary of 2017-2018 academic year by Dr Pedro Álvarez, coordinator of the Surgical and Functional Anatomy Unit, and traumatologist and researcher at the García-Cugat Foundation and Hospital Quirón.
