Dr García studies in London media value and sporting rivalries in European football

The lecturer at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences has received a research grant which he will pursue at Birkbeck University of London

Dr Pedro García of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences carried out a research stay at Birkbeck University of London where he is conducting the study: “Media value and sporting rivalries in European football: Comparative analysis of the status of clubs in national leagues and in the UEFA”.

The research grant for the period between 10 June and 11 July allowed Dr García to work alongside his counterpart, Giambattista Rossi, from the British university.

“We aim to carry out a comparative analysis of the status of football clubs competing in the main European national leagues and in the UEFA. With this view in mind, economic information will be reviewed, but so will the visibility of the teams and leagues in the media, the economist explains.

Presenting his research

Moreover, Dr García presented his research at City University of London focusing on talent scouting in football clubs.

Specifically, he presented his paper entitled “Winners in the field versus winners in the media. Club owners’ behaviour at hiring football players” at the XVII European Economics and Finance Society Annual Conference.

At this conference, the lecturer at UIC Barcelona discussed how professional football is a special sector within the entertainment industry and the specificities of the job market for professional footballers.
