Faculty of Humanities lecturer Ricardo María Jiménez recently published an academic paper in the second-quartile journal Onomázein. Under the title “Análisis de los editoriales sobre una polémica visita papal” [Analysis of editorials on a controversial papal visit], he analysed the editorials published in four Spanish media sources in the run-up to Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United Kingdom in 2010.

Among the conclusions, Jiménez explains that all four newspapers (El País, ABC, La Vanguardia and El Periódico) that covered the Pope's visit framed the event differently. “The editorials published in El País and ABC are clearly polarised; while the journalism in the texts in El Periódico and La Vanguardia is more inclusive”, admits the lecturer.

“In the study I analysed the ideological foundation and argumentative strategies used in the frames of the editorials published in these four Spanish newspapers”, explains Jiménez.

Onomázein is a journal of linguistics, philology and translation which features previously unpublished articles stemming from scientific research in the different branches of theoretical and applied linguistics. It aims to serve as an efficient vehicle for scientific exchange between researchers in language sciences.
