Dr. Sarrablo Discusses New Uses of Ceramic Sheets in Architecture

Dr. Vicenç Sarrablo, the Director of the ESARQ School of Architecture, spoke at the second Congress of Ceramics and Architecture in Madrid, which took place on Monday and Tuesday, 27-28 May 2013. He discussed new ways in which well-known architects have been using ceramic sheets over the last several years.

The congress, whose theme was "The Substantial in the Material", brought together researchers, architects, engineers and other professionals. Over the two days, participants discussed ceramics in architecture in terms of art history: great masters who have used it, restoring buildings with ceramics and collaborations between architects and ceramists. The work of different contemporary architects who have used ceramics in their projects was also discussed in terms of the conception of space, reasons that justify their use, etc.

Dr. Sarrablo is the Director of the ESARQ School of Architecture and the UIC ASCER Ceramic Studies Department. His research resulted in a revolutionary technology created with an industrialized system of flexible ceramic sheets used to construct cladding and laminar structures. Thanks to these large-format sheets created with a system of woven steel, it is now possible to create curves and combinations of patterns with great speed, reliability, savings and customized design in a variety of materials such as brick. These ceramic sheets, called Flexbrick, are the result of a project carried out by Dr. Vicenç Sarrablo and the Spanish ceramic companies Piera Ecocerámica and Cerámica Malpesa.
