Co-directed by Dr Ricard Mamblona, a lecturer in the Faculty of Communication Sciences, and Pepe Miralles, this festival was created to disseminate films aimed at raising people's awareness of various diseases.

In this the festival's third edition, a total of 77 short films from around the world will compete in the Official Selection, which includes documentaries and animated and fictional shorts, with screenings at two venues: the IVAM and Las Naves. A series of parallel activities have also been scheduled on issues such as the consequences of homophobia, the war in Syria and how the economic crisis and cutbacks have affected the healthcare system.

This edition will discuss the pathological consequences of homophobia, at the Student Recreation Centre at the Universitat Politècnica de València; the war in Syria, at the Octubre Contemporary Culture Centre; and how the economic crisis and cutbacks have affected the healthcare system, at Palau de Cerveró in Valencia. In addition to the Official Selection, which will be held at the IVAM, this edition will also feature a new venue: Las Naves.

The aim of FICAE is to use film and art to raise people's awareness of illness as a life process and combat the stigma that continues to surround a large number of diseases. Another of the festival’s objectives is to encourage and disseminate audiovisual and artistic production through parallel projects and initiatives such as FICAE [Nómada], an activity which transcends the dates and location of the festival with a view to making portrayals of illness more visible and assisting in the transfer of knowledge.
