Humanities students visit the Sagrada Familia to learn about its history and architecture

The tour was organised as part of the subject on Contemporary Art

On 15 February, students from the Faculty of Humanities visited the Sagrada Familia to learn about the basilica’s history and architecture. As part of the activity, they also had the opportunity to visit the museum and Les Escoles, a small adjoining building that Antoni Gaudí designed and built for the labourers’ children while their fathers worked.

The students were accompanied by Dr Alberto T. Estévez, a full professor at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, who provided in situ explanations about the basilica’s Modernist style and the most notable aspects of Gaudí’s creation.

“With the students”, explained the professor, “we discussed aspects such as Gaudí’s work methods, the influence and inspiration of nature, ruled geometry and the religious symbolism of the different parts of the building and the adornments”.

The Humanities students also had a first-hand look at the progress being made on the basilica’s construction. More specifically, they were treated to explanations about the work currently being done on the two towers that are yet to be built and which were part on the Catalan artist’s original project.
