Intangibles and business excellence at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences

José María Viedma, president of Intellectual Capital Management Systems and founding partner of M.A Fusiones y Adquisiciones, recently spent some time with 4th year Business Administration and Management (ADE) students to talk to them about his work. The session was entitled: “Intangibles and business excellence in the knowledge economy”.

Professor Viedma, holder of a PhD in industrial engineering and a degree in Economic Science, is a pioneer at a global level in terms of managing intangibles and managing intellectual capital with singular contributions in this field not only in the theoretical field but also in terms of practical application.

During his session, Viedma described what he calls the “knowledge economy”. “This is the economy that is instigated by various agents, whether through universities, governments or companies, that based on the encouragement of learning and the transmission of information (thanks to technology), generates a competitive advantage and therefore a type of wealth”.

Along these lines, he stated that “the most important thing is to ensure that it is employees who in some way must learn to manage and analyse the large databases that are obtained, therefore, the aim is to develop Big Data further”. This is the “4.0. economy”

This is what he meant when referring to “intangibles”. As Viedma explained, “It is a group of assets that cannot be perceived physically, in other words, they are immaterial, but have the ability to contribute wealth to financial entities, as well as tangible assets”. There are different types of intangible assets and each of these have an intrinsic value depending on their configuration”. Intangible assets are financially quantifiable, they are capable of generating value in a company and allow future benefits to be obtained.
