Josep Argemí: “I would like to think that at the university you have learnt to learn”

The former UIC Barcelona rector and promoter of the university’s physiotherapy programme delivered the keynote address at the graduation ceremony for the Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy

The newly minted physiotherapists from the seventh graduating class of the Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy celebrated their graduation ceremony with former UIC Barcelona rector Dr Josep Argemí as the keynote speaker. In his address, Dr Argemí placed special emphasis on the university’s role “not only to train you as physiotherapy professionals, but also to help you grow at the personal level, developing values such as solidarity, perseverance, friendship and a passion for innovation”. In this regard, he confided, “I would like to think that over the course of your time here at the university, you have learnt to learn.”

Argemí also stressed the importance for students of being able to adapt to the circumstances they will encounter throughout their lives. “Physiotherapy, like so many professions, will change a lot in the years that you will be working, due to new technologies”, he said. “However, I believe that the human factor will always be necessary in the health sector.”

The former rector also underscored the major evolution that students undergo from the first year of their studies to when they finish the fourth. As a lecturer, he noted, “it brings me great satisfaction to see this change over the course of your university life”. Nevertheless, he continued, “I hope that everything you have learnt here will be useful to you over the course of your career.”

Following Dr Argemí’s address, graduates received their diplomas and the representative of the graduating class delivered a speech. The current dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr Albert Balaguer, gave the closing remarks, and the ceremony ended with a rendition of the traditional university song Gaudeamus Igitur.
