Lecturer Maria Mut, Judge of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court

The moot court competition is one of the most prestigious in the world, with some 700 participating law schools from 100 countries

Dr Maria Mut Bosque, lecturer of the law faculty was invited as a judge of the famous Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. This event, recognised as one of the most prestigious moot court competitions in international law and referred to in the tradition of international Moot Courts as a "grand slam", brings together some 700 universities and law schools from approximately a hundred different countries and jurisdictions.

The competition, whose origin dates back to 1960 under the direction of former President of the International Court of Justice, Stephen M. Schwebel, was born with the mission of involving law students in the study and exercise of international law. “It was initially exclusive to universities of the United States, however, in 1968 the Jessup opened its doors to the worldwide participation of law universities, consolidating itself as an emblematic event in the international legal landscape,” says the lecturer and judge of the competition.

Cuatrecasas law firm, which has a work placement agreement with UIC Barcelona, has over a decade of experience organising the national heats of this prestigious competition. Once again the firm invited Dr Mut Bosque to join as a judge in the national heats that took place from 20 to 22 February at the Cuatrecasas offices in Barcelona.

The teams discussed a current legal conflict before the jury, composed of a panel of experts in the field. “This year,” explained the lecturer, “the competition revolved around the so-called the ‘Sterren Forty case’, a dispute of public international law between two states, which arises from a conflict over freedom of expression, privacy of nationality, border control and the interpretation of international treaties in this regard.”

The winners of the national heats will go on to the international rounds, which will be held from 30 March to 6 April at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington, D.C.
