Lecturer Urmeneta discusses fake news at a congress on security and technology

Security Forum is an event that brings together experts from a host of different sectors to analyse the latest developments in areas such as video surveillance, physical security and system integration.

Fake news is one of today’s hottest topics. So much so that Security Forum, an event that explores security from many different perspectives, and which took place in Barcelona on 30 and 31 May, invited Faculty of Communication Sciences lecturer Miquel Urmeneta to take part.

The congress looked at such diverse topics as the latest developments in video surveillance, physical security and system integration, among other aspects. That said, the importance of information security or disformation security, as it were, was also a significant topic of discussion in the sixth edition of this event.

Urmeneta gave an explanation of exactly what fake news is, as not all disformation may be regarded as such. According to the lecturer, fake news is the result of a narrative conditioned by the interpretative frameworks promoted by the political sphere.

The Faculty lecturer also addressed the issue of responsibility when it comes to fake news, underscoring the role users play in its perpetuation by sharing them and that it is not merely a question of journalistic ethics.

Participants in the sixth edition of Security Forum included the director of Cybersecurity at Acciona, Alberto Ruiz; the managing director of Destinia, Amuda Goueli; and the director of Corporate Security for the Port of Barcelona, Bernat Baró.
