The legacy of the Revolution of 1968, analysed in the UNIV Forum

The round table organised by the Faculty of Humanities took a look at this historical time from three distinct viewpoints.

The Faculty of Humanities at UIC Barcelona organised the local Catalan stage of the UNIV Forum, in which the work groups presented and discussed their papers. The Forum ended with a round table.

The first speaker, Dr Mireia Tintoré, spoke about the May 1968 events and their influence on contemporary society. The second speaker, Dr Alberto Estévez, analysed the Revolution of 1968 through the prism of art (“The Path of Art and Architecture Leading Up to May 1968”). The third speaker, Dr Gabriel Fernández, explored the subject from a different stance, with a presentation entitled “1968, Internet and the Emergence of the Network Society".

These presentations gave attendees a more in-depth understanding of the Revolution of 1968, addressing issues such as the motives behind the Revolution and the extent to which we have inherited the ideas and thoughts of the young people of that time. It also made it possible to draw conclusions on the evolution of art in the period leading up to May 1968. How art, for instance, mirrored the revolution and provided it a means of expression.

The final presentation analysed what it means to belong to the network society through five aspects, and illustrated how certain aspects and ideals inherent to the May 1968 movement are still alive in today’s society.

The event ended with a question and answer session between the speakers and audience members.
